LOGAN TWP. — One person has been injured and emergency personnel have evacuated a large area after a rail car leaking propylene was reported at Pureland Industrial Park, county officials said.propylene
The injured person was taken to Crozer-Chester Medical Center for evaluation, officials said. The nature of the injury has not been reported.
The leak is coming from a stem valve on the car, which reportedly contains 30,000 gallons of the highly combustible material. Propylene turns from liquid to gas when exposed to air.
The material could be seen billowing from the tanker as officials evacuated nearby workers and residents within a half mile of the scene.
The tanker is located off Osprey Court at SMS Rail Lines.
Some roads around the immediate area have been blocked off and ramps for exit 10 on Interstate 295 have been temporarily closed.
A firefighter took readings of air quality near the scene as the odor of propylene filled the air. “It’s gonna be a long day,” he remarked.
