Despite being one of the worst reviewed films of the year, The Emoji Movie, which currently has a 6% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes and an average rating of 2/10, the animated adventure is still managing to attract moviegoers after pulling in a respectable $10 million on Friday, beating out Dunkirk‘s $7.9 million, which is currently in its second week.
However, with The Emoji Movie and Dunkirk both tracking at $27 million, it’s a bit too early to say who will ultimately win the weekend box office, though Christopher Nolan’s WWII drama, whose PG-13 rating is able to draw in both the younger and older crowd, does have the slight upper hand at the moment.
As a flaming pile of animated garbage and the year’s first serious awards contender continue to battle it out for the top spot, the action-packed Atomic Blonde and the raunchy Girls Trip are going head to head for third place. The former isn’t living up to the expectations set forth by early forecasts, but it’s still doing exceptionally well with $7 million on Friday, while the latter followed close behind with $6 million. Though Atomic Blonde was able to come out as the clear winner on Friday, box office analysts say Girls Trip will top the espionage thriller $19 million to $18 million by Sunday evening.
At the lower end of the spectrum is Luc Besson’s visually stunning flop Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, which dropped nearly 63% this weekend, with $6.3 million, and Kathryn Bigelow’s latest effort Detroit, rolling out in limited release, with $394k.
